Foods for smoothing Liver Qi flow in springtime
Spring is here and now is the time for uprising, regrowing, and cleansing after the long cold winter.
Spring is the season of Yang in Yakuzen and is associated with the below.
Element – Wood
Yin organ – Liver
Yang organ – Gallbladder
Emotion – Anger
Taste – Sour
Color – Green
In TCM, spring is associated with the liver as you can see above and the main roles of the liver are to store blood and regulate the volume of blood, smoothen Qi (vital energy) flow throughout our bodies, and support the digestive system.
The liver is the most affected organ during springtime because it's working at its peak and it can cause upper body symptoms such as eye issues and liver Qi stagnation which causes the emotion of anger and irritability.
Nourishing your liver is the key to your happy and healthy springtime.
Also, when the liver overworks, it can weaken the spleen and stomach. It's good to include foods that aid digestion and absorption, as well as sweet-flavoured foods that harmonize the spleen and stomach.
What foods are good for improving your liver functions?
- Seasonal green vegetables like spinach, Japanese mustard spinach, and asparagus.
- Sweet-flavored foods like carrots, pumpkins, potatoes, jujube, chicken, beef, soybeans, regular rice, cabbages, and Chinese yam.
- Pungent-flavored foods like celery, crown daisies, spring onions, and ginger roots help your liver send Qi smoothly throughout your body.
- Bitter-flavored foods such as bamboo shoots, udo, and mugwort are good for detox.
- When the liver is highly active, sour-flavored foods help to maintain and control its function properly. However, because sour flavors have astringent and contracting effects, they can restrict the growth and release of yang energy, so they should be used carefully.
