Tofu- A Gentle Remedy for Dryness and Overheating

Tofu

Japanese
Tofu (豆腐)

Tofu, also known as soybean curd, is a soy-based food that helps cool the body, generate fluids, and provide moisture—making it a perfect ingredient for the hot summer months.
In Japan, it’s commonly enjoyed chilled as hiyayakko, topped with favorites like spring onions and pickled vegetables, or added to miso soup. But tofu also appears frequently on the table during the dry and cooler seasons—in yudofu (gently simmered tofu served hot) in autumn and winter, or agedashi tofu, which is lightly battered, deep-fried, and served in a savory dashi broth.

Because tofu has a naturally cooling nature, it’s a good idea to pair it with warming foods like green onions or ginger to help balance its effects.
Tofu helps hydrate the body and can relieve dryness-related symptoms such as dry skin, thirst, and constipation.
