Tuna in Yakuzen: Benefits for Qi, Blood, and Liver Health

Tuna

Japanese
Maguro (鮪)

Tuna is a large migratory fish belonging to the mackerel family (Scombridae) within the order Perciformes. It has a lifespan of 10 to 20 years, and depending on the species, some can grow to over 3m in length and weigh more than 300kg.

Tuna is well known as a "neta", an ingredient for sashimi and sushi. It is also famous for being rich in high-quality protein (especially in the lean red meat) and unsaturated fatty acids such as DHA and EPA (particularly in the fatty "toro" cuts). Additionally, it contains high amounts of vitamins A, D, and E, and the dark flesh (blood-rich parts) includes iron, and taurine which supports liver function.

From the Yakuzen perspective, tuna is a warming-natured fish and helps replenish Qi and blood. It is particularly beneficial for people who suffer from cold sensitivity or tend to get fatigued easily due to a weak constitution.
