Komatsuna: A Japanese Leafy Green for Wellness and Yakuzen Cooking
Komatsuna - Japanese Mustard Spinach
Komatsuna (小松菜), sometimes called Japanese mustard spinach, is a leafy green widely enjoyed in Japan. It has a mild flavor — somewhere between spinach and bok choy — and can be eaten raw in salads, lightly stir-fried, or simmered in soups.
In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), komatsuna is believed to enter the Lung and Liver channels, helping replenish yin fluids and ease dryness. It’s also thought to cool excess heat in the body, calm irritability, and support natural detoxification.
From a nutritional perspective, komatsuna is rich in calcium, iron, potassium, and vitamin C, making it a wonderful green for both strength and vitality. In Japan, we enjoy it in soups, stir-fries, and even blended into smoothies for a refreshing boost.
