100% Buckwheat and Digestion: Support Qi Flow and Relieve Bloating Naturally

Buckwheat

Japanese
Soba (蕎麦)

We have many different types of soba noodles in Japan. They are a deeply rooted and culturally significant food.
You can choose from hot or cold soba, Juwari soba (100% buckwheat), Nihachi soba (made with 80% buckwheat and 20% wheat flour), or Gowari soba (50% buckwheat), among others.

Among them, 100% buckwheat noodles, known as Juwari soba, are especially valued in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) for their ability to support digestion and help move stomach Qi downward. In TCM, when stomach Qi flows downward smoothly, it helps eliminate food stagnation and reduces symptoms like bloating, nausea, and burping.

Buckwheat also nourishes the spleen and supports the stomach — two key organs in TCM responsible for transforming food into energy (Qi). It’s often recommended for people who feel heavy in the stomach, have a poor appetite due to indigestion, or experience loose stools.

However, buckwheat is classified as a cooling food, meaning it can lower internal heat and soothe inflammation, but may worsen symptoms related to cold, such as sensitivity to cold, fatigue, or cold-related digestive weakness.
If you experience such symptoms, it’s best to enjoy hot soba or pair buckwheat dishes with warming ingredients like ginger, spring onions, chicken, or shrimps to maintain balance.
