Brown Sugar Benefits in Traditional Wellness: Warm the Body and Support Blood Flow
Brown sugar
The most famous Japanese brown sugar comes from Okinawa and is simply made from sugar cane.
We use brown sugar and white sugar for different purposes. According to Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), brown sugar warms the spleen and stomach, nourishes the blood, and promotes blood circulation, making it especially helpful for people with cold-related symptoms such as fatigue, abdominal pain, or menstrual cramps. It’s often used in warming teas or postpartum recovery dishes to gently restore energy and strengthen the body.
In contrast, white sugar has a cooler nature and is said to moisten the lungs and reduce phlegm, which may be helpful during dry coughs or throat irritation.
Brown sugar is particularly beneficial for people with blood deficiency or blood stasis constitutions — both of which are commonly linked to symptoms like cold hands and feet, menstrual irregularities, or dull skin tone in TCM.
However, if you have phlegm-dampness symptoms, such as bloating, heaviness, or excess mucus, it’s best to limit sugar intake (including both brown and white), as both have a moistening effect that can worsen dampness in the body. Balance is key, as always in Yakuzen.
